Friedland’s presentation, which was part of a day-long Continuing Legal Education program at the annual meeting, reviewed decisions by the U.S. Supreme Court, the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals, and the North Carolina appellate courts.

“Because of increasingly vague decisions by the U.S. Supreme Court, we are seeing a proliferation of criminal law cases coming before the Fourth Circuit and state courts seeking interpretation of those decisions,” Friedland said, summarizing one of the themes of his presentation. “In response, the Fourth Circuit and North Carolina courts have been crafting new precedent seeking greater clarity, as opposed to ad hoc determinations.”
