Scholarships support students with Study Abroad

Several Elon students have been awarded prestigious scholarships for their upcoming spring 2011 semester study abroad programs.

Two Elon students have been awarded Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarships to help fund their semester study abroad experiences.

Jonathan Ordog, a junior from East Greenwich, R.I., received $8,000 toward his studies at The American University in Cairo, Egypt. Ordog will continue studying Arabic language while in Egypt and his award includes a $3,000 Critical Need Language Supplement. He is majoring in public administration and international studies and is has a minor in political science.

Shakinah Simeona, a junior from Roosevelt, N.Y., received a $4,000 scholarship to help fund her spring 2011 semester at The Beijing Center for Chinese Studies in China. Simeona is a marketing major with a minor in accounting.

Sarah Naiman, a junior from Shady Side, Md., is the recipient of a $2,500 Bridging Scholarship for Study Abroad in Japan. The scholarship will help fund her semester as an exchange student at Kansai Gaidai University in Osaka, Japan. Naiman is majoring in international studies and economics, with a minor in Asian studies. The scholarship is administered by The Association of Teachers of Japanese Bridging Project.

Several Elon students were awarded scholarships by the Foundation for International Education.
Justin Veldhuis, a junior journalism and international studies major from Albany, N.Y., will study at the FIE program in Madrid, Spain. Elise Delmerico, a strategic communications major with minors in professional writing studies and leadership, from Winchester, Va., and Kathleen Blackney, a junior psychology major with minors in non-violence studies and international studies from Wayne, Pa., will study at the FIE program in Dublin, Ireland, for the semester.

In addition to outside scholarship programs, students will receive support for international study from Elon. The Isabella Cannon International Centre awarded nearly $25,000 in need-based scholarships to more than 25 students for the Spring 2011 semester. A number of students are also recipients of travel grants from Elon fellows and scholars programs.

Almost 180 Elon students will study abroad for the Spring 2011 semester. They will enroll in 36 different programs in 25 countries around the globe.

The Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship program aims to diversify the kinds of students who study abroad and the countries and regions where they study. The program is funded by the U.S. Department of State, Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, and is administered by the Institute of International Education.
