The Love School of Business and accounting and finance honorary organization Beta Alpha Psi are sponsoring Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Clinics this month at Holly Hill Mall for Alamance County residents.
The IRS VITA program offers free tax help for low- to moderate-income people who cannot prepare their own tax returns. Nearly thirty students became IRS certified to prepare basic tax returns for qualifying taxpayers in Burlington and Alamance County. This is the first year that Beta Alpha Psi has offered the VITA program. The organization began planning and training for the 2011 VITA clinics a year ago.
“As a BAP chapter, we believe this is the perfect opportunity to develop and utilize our accounting skills and help give back to the surrounding community,” says Jennifer Kirts, a senior accounting major and president of BAP at Elon. The VITA clinics will become a major yearly service project for the organization.
“This is a great experience for our students so that they can combine their formal accounting and tax education with a real-world experience where others are counting on them for professional advice,” says Art Cassill, professor of accounting in the Love School of Business and a faculty advisor to Beta Alpha Psi’s VITA initiative. “It really puts the pressure on students, but they have been trained and are very cognizant of their responsibilities.”
Beta Alpha Psi will be offering VITA clinics at Holly Hill Mall on the following days and times:
Wednesday, March 9th from 4-6pm
Saturday, March 12th from 10 am-2 pm
Wednesday, March 30th from 4-6 pm
Saturday, April 2nd from 10 am-2 pm
