School of Education honors faculty and students

The School of Education recognized distinguished student and faculty achievement over the past year in a May 6 ceremony in the Moseley Center.

Education

Arnold Strauch Award
Kyle Bounty

This award is presented to a senior education major with an outstanding academic record, superior student teaching performance, high level of professionalism, and potential for contributing to the field of education.

Excellence in Scholarship Award
Associate professor Jean Rattigan-Rohr

This award is designed to recognize the faculty member who exemplifies the Elon University teacher-scholar. Scholarship that advances the knowledge of one’s discipline and supports one’s teaching is the hallmark of the Elon teacher-scholar. Evidence of scholarship may be demonstrated by publications, conference presentations, and other appropriate venues. Collaborative efforts with colleagues and with students are valued aspects of scholarly endeavors, and the award is based on the previous year’s work.

Excellence in Teaching Award
Assistant professor Terry Tomasek

Consistent with Elon’s philosophy of outstanding teaching, the award recognizes a faculty member who has demonstrated outstanding teaching in the previous three years. Included in the criteria will be evidence of excellence in faculty advising as a critical component of teaching. Evidence of engaging students in active learning and applications of theory to practice in substantive and meaningful ways will also be important evidence in selection. Mentoring students in undergraduate research is also evidence of engaging students in active learning.

Health and Human Performance

Janie P. Brown Emerging Professional Award
Robert D. Brown

This award is presented to a rising senior in the Department of Health and Human Performance with a record of university involvement, service and professionalism. Recipients must have a minimum GPA of 3.0.

Outstanding Physical Education and Health Major of the Year Award
Tara McFadden

The Department of Health and Human Performance recognizes outstanding students in the physical education and health major with a minimum GPA of 3.3 who have distinguished themselves in the areas of academics, service and scholarship.

Excellence in Service Award
Senior lecturer Amanda Tapler

This award is designed to recognize the faulty member who has served to advance the School of Education, Elon University, and the profession. Service on committees, recruitment activities, and other tasks that better the institution are to be considered in the service award. Recipients of the service award have provided leadership and promoted collegiality within the School of Education. This award is intended primarily to recognize faculty whose service is internal to the institution.
