The Spring 2011 edition of The North Carolina State Bar Journal includes "The Stone Bull," a short story authored by Miriam Heard, member of Elon Law’s Class of 2009. Heard submitted the work for consideration through the N.C. State Bar Association’s Seventh Annual Fiction Writing Competition.
The Publications Committee of the North Carolina State Bar sponsored the writing competition. Heard’s submission earned third prize by a panel of six committee members and was published in sixteenth edition of the Journal as a result.
“The Stone Bull” focuses on the character of Roy Parker the night before his daughter is set to become the first African-American child to attend an all-white high school in Georgia.
Since her admission to the bar, Heard has worked for the Greensboro office of the statewide nonprofit law firm, Legal Aid of North Carolina, Inc., where she focuses on Medicaid, Social Security, and other state and federal administrative law issues.
