Robert H. Moorman joins Elon University’s faculty this month as the Frank S. Holt, Jr., Professor of Business Leadership in the Martha and Spencer Love School of Business. Named in honor of the former president of Holt Manufacturing Co. in Burlington, N.C., the professorship honors the vision, leadership and compassion that were trademarks of Frank Holt’s career.
“Elon is a place where all students are challenged to put their knowledge into practice in order to become leaders with depth and skill,” Moorman said. “As the Holt Professor, I am pleased to join Elon’s energetic leadership development culture and further pleased that I will be working with the many talented members of the Elon community on new leadership development programs for our students.”
Prior to joining Elon, Moorman was the Robert Daugherty Chair in Management, associate dean for graduate business programs and founding director of the Anna Tyler Waite Center for Leadership at Creighton University in Nebraska. In honor of his teaching, research and service at Creighton, he received the Dean’s Award for Excellence in 2001 and 2005 as well as the Cahill Award for Excellence in 2008.
Moorman was also an associate professor of management at West Virginia University, and has taught executive leadership courses at the University of Otago in New Zealand since 2002.
Moorman’s research interests include the study of leader integrity, work group cooperation, organizational justice and the performance of organizational citizenship behaviors. In a 2008 study on the impact of management research, Moorman was ranked #121 in a list of the top 150 most cited scholars in the field of management from 1981-2004. His articles have been published in the Academy of Management Journal, Journal of Organizational Behavior, Journal of Applied Psychology, International Journal of Leadership Studies, European Management Journal and Group and Organizational Management.
He co-authored a chapter in The Handbook of Organizational Justice on the relationship between organizational justice and organizational citizenship behavior.
Moorman holds a Ph.D. in organizational behavior and an M.B.A. from Indiana University, and a Bachelor of Arts in geology from The College of Wooster in Ohio.
