The Elon Academy and PERCS are hosting Dr. Julio Cammarota on campus Nov. 10. Dr. Cammarota is a noted anthropologist and researcher, an associate professor of Mexican American studies at The University of Arizona, and the director of the Social Justice Education Project in Tucson, Arizona.
“Cammarota’s research focuses on participatory action research with Latina/o youth, institutional factors in academic achievement, and liberatory pedagogy. He has published articles on family, work, and education among Latinas/os and on the relationship between culture and academic achievement. He is the co-editor of “Beyond Resistance! Youth Activism and Community Change: New Democratic Possibilities for Practice and Policy for America’s Youth” and his work has been instrumental with advancing social justice in education and youth development.”
Scholars from the Elon Academy have spent the past year researching the barriers and opportunities that underrepresented students face as they prepare for college. They will have an exhibit of their work and a book signing (they used their research to write a book). There will also be a reception at the same time. The event will be on Nov. 10 from 5:30-6:30 p.m. The event will be held in Center for the Arts.
Dr. Cammarota will speak immediately following the reception/exhibit/book signing from 6:45-7:30 p.m. in Yeager Recital Hall.
