Mary Yost received recognition for her work with service-learning programs at the university and with a street newspaper in Greensboro, N.C.

Elon University senior Mary Yost is one of 19 college students from across the state to receive North Carolina Campus Compact’s Community Impact Student Award for making significant, innovative contributions to their campus’ efforts to address local community needs.
Awardees also received a certificate of appreciation from North Carolina Gov. Beverly Perdue.
Yost is a journalism major and non-violence studies minor from Silver Spring, Md. She lived in Elon’s Service-Learning Community as a first-year student and continued to serve her community as service learning leader in her sophomore and junior years.
Yost is a coordinator for an alternative break trip and a student teacher for a Winter Term service-learning course to Washington, D.C., that focuses on issues of hunger and homelessness. In addition to her roles on campus, she is a founding co-editor for the New Greensboro Voice, a street newspaper that addresses social issues not frequently covered in mainstream media outlets.
The awards were presented Nov. 12 at the 19th NC Campus Compact Student Conference that brought together over 200 college students and guests representing 26 North Carolina higher education institutions at Wake Forest University. The Compact’s executive director, Lisa Keyne, presented the awards with John Barnhill, founding director of NC Campus Compact and current assistant vice president for University Advancement at Elon.
