Kirstin Ringelberg, Associate Professor of Art History, presented her current work on the Japanese video installation artist Tabaimo at the Asian Studies Conference Japan (ASCJ) conference at Rikkyo University in Tokyo on June 30, 2012.
Tabaimo was the artist selected to represent Japan in the 2011 Venice Biennale; Ringelberg’s work on Tabaimo examines the way writing on this and other Japanese artists often serves to maintain gendered, binaristic views of Japanese art as a form of “Western” cultural hegemony.
