From the Durham Herald-Sun (8/10/12): Butch Davis received a protective order that ensured his private cell phone records will not be released, but he may still have to reveal calls made from his personal phone that related to his job as the University of North Carolina's head football coach.
That ruling, issued by Superior Court Judge Howard Manning on Thursday, was the result of a lawsuit by eight media organizations seeking information on the NCAA’s investigation into the football program, including Davis’s phone records.
Davis used his personal phone instead of his university-issued phone when he was UNC’s coach from November 2006 to July 2011. Manning wrote that he didn’t believe government officials, including UNC coaches, should be able to “evade” North Carolina Public Records law just by using a personal phone.
