Famed sustainability advocate to give talk at Elon – April 22

Author, sociologist and sustainability expert Hunter Lovins will discuss April 22 how companies and communities are implementing genuine sustainability to create a more prosperous future in a free presentation open to the public at Elon University.

“The Business Case for Implementing Sustainability” takes place that Monday evening at 7:30 p.m. in McKinnon Hall inside the Moseley Center.

Lovins is president and founder of Natural Capitalism Solutions, a consulting company that works with businesses to “restore and enhance natural and human capital while increasing prosperity and quality of life.” In her work consulting private and public sector organizations, Lovins has assisted numerous companies such as Dutch Royal Shell, Cliff Bar and Wal-Mart with developing innovative and practical ways to increase efficiency and environmental practices, while also enhancing economic viability. 

Lovins is co-author of 10 books including Natural Capitalism. Her most recent work, The Way Out: Kick-Starting Capitalism to Save Our Economic Ass, discusses how renovating our economies and cities for a low-carbon economy not only addresses issues of national security and climate change but is also good for business. Lovins will be available to sign books after her presentation. 

For her innovative work, Lovins has received a number of honors including the Right Livelihood Award also known as the “alternative Nobel prize”, Time magazine’s “Hero of the Planet” in 2000, “Green Business Icon” status from Newsweek in 2009 and in 2012 she received the Rachel Carson Award.

Lovins currently continues to work with Natural Capitalism Solutions and is faculty at the Bainbridge Graduate Institute. Her visit is sponsored by the Office of Sustainability, General Studies, the Love School of Business, the Center for Environmental Studies, the Liberal Arts Forum and the Truitt Center for Religious and Spiritual Life.
