This week, Elon again hosted the regional Envirothon competition for middle and high school students.
On Monday, March 25, nearly 300 students visited the Elon campus. In the morning, they participated in workshops on environmental topics, including soils, water, wildlife, forestry and current environmental issues.
In the afternoon, students competed in contests where they demonstrated knowledge in each of the topic areas. Contests took the format of written tests completed as 4 person teams. Student teams came from 11 surrounding counties. Winners of today’s competition are eligible to compete in the state championship. Winners from North Carolina will they travel to the National Championship this summer.
Student teams often spend years in preparation for this event, and are very successful in demonstrating a high level of knowledge about the environment and ecology.
