"Preparing Advocates: Service-Learning in TESOL for Future Mainstream Educators," by associate professor Jessie L. Moore, appears in the September 2013 issue of TESOL Journal.
In “Preparing Advocates: Service-Learning in TESOL for Future Mainstream Educators,” associate professor Jessie L. Moore suggests that service-learning helps education majors learn about the English language learners (ELLs) they will teach in mainstream K-12 classes. Students also gain a richer understanding of TESOL theories and practices. Most importantly, Moore’s study of the pedagogy in multiple semesters of an Introduction to TESOL course suggests that partnering with local ELL classrooms also helps education majors develop a sense of advocacy for their future ELL students.
The 2008-2011 study was supported by the Center for the Advancement of Teaching and Learning (CATL) Elon Teaching and Learning Partnership and a CATL Scholar award.
Moore’s article appears in the September 2013 issue of TESOL Journal, a peer-reviewed, practioner-oriented journal focused on theory and research in the field of Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages.
