Elon students were awarded $114,500 in additional scholarships specifically for global study in the fall semester of 2013.
The Isabella Cannon Global Education Center is proud to announce that Elon students have been awarded $114,500 in additional scholarships for fall semester abroad programs.
Kanree Wright, a senior, and Rachel Miller, a junior, were awarded the prestigious Gilman scholarship. The Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship program supports a diverse range of students who are traditionally underrepresented in global study. The scholarship is nationally-competitive and is funded by the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs.
A media arts & entertainment broadcast major, Wright is currently adjusting to life at the Elon Center in London. Originally from West Africa and raised in Charlotte, N.C., Wright said of the scholarship, “While I’ve had many bumps along the road, I know my study abroad experience in London would not have been possible without this scholarship.”
Miller, a human services studies major from Southern Shores, N.C., just began fall semester in Copenhagen at the Danish Institute for Study Abroad. Miller said the program has exceeded all of her expectations so far, and she also expressed excitement about her courses.
“Thanks to the Gilman scholarship, I am able to expand my knowledge through my enrollment in an extra course that focuses on the Holocaust, in which we will be traveling to Poland and Germany,” Miller said.
In addition to the Gilman awards, students received a total of $49,800 in aid from external sources. The Isabella Cannon Global Education Center also awarded $57,700 in scholarships.
Financial aid plays an important role in Elon’s goal of 100-percent access to global study. Elon currently offers $120,000 in need-based aid on an annual basis, though that number will quadruple to nearly half-a-million dollars in the next four years. This fall 399 Elon students are studying abroad in 24 different countries. This number represents a 13 percent increase in participation from last year.
