Experience IT Lunch and Learn – Flipping Out in Psychology

October 17 12:30 - 1:30 p.m. Belk Library 114 RSVP

This Experience IT session features Dr. Amy Hogan, Assistant Professor of Psychology, who participated in TLTs summer online flipped instruction course.  You will learn how Amy uses different tools to flip her course.  Below, Amy describes what she will cover during her interactive lunch and learn session.

During traditional class time, I like to provide many opportunities for students to apply what they are learning to the real world. I usually accomplish this by bringing in examples from the popular media (songs, YouTube videos, bad reality TV clips, etc) to show how theoretical principles in psychology apply in everyday settings. I sometimes find it difficult to balance delivering content and also having time for the application and following discussion. Some lectures can be application heavy and not enough content. Flipping the class solves this problem in two important ways: it enables students to cover the basics outside of the classroom, but critically, provides the opportunity to spend more time in class on the higher forms of cognitive work (application, analysis, synthesis, and/or evaluation).

During this session, I will discuss some of the ways I have flipped my course, including some of the tools I have used to turn offline reading content into engaging  screencasts. I’ll discuss the pros and cons of flipping the course, from both an instructor and students’ point of view. By the end of the session, I hope you will have a clearer idea about what flipping actually is, how you can apply some of the principles in your own class and why it is worth the effort!

Lunch will be provided for faculty who register before October 16th.  Seating is limited.
