Math majors, faculty give invited presentations at national conference

Shill and Strosnider presented invited talks at the special session for undergraduate research in mathematics.  Shill’s talk, “Computing Galois groups of degree 12 2-adic fields with trivial automorphism group,” was based on research conducted with Assistant Professor of Mathematics Chad Awtrey, Miles, Strosnider and Elon undergraduate Brett Barkley ’15. Their corresponding paper has been submitted for publication.

Strosnider’s talk, “Degree 14 2-adic fields,” details joint work with Awtrey, Miles, Shill and UNC-Greensboro doctoral student Jonathan Milstead (co-advised by Awtrey and associate professor of mathematics at UNCG Sebastian Pauli). Their corresponding paper has been accepted for publication in the journal Involve, a top journal for publishing faculty-student mathematics research results.  

Miles’s talk, “Classifying degree 12 2-adic fields with automorphism group of order 4,” is based on joint work with Awtrey, Barkley, Shill and Strosnider. Their paper has been accepted for publication to the Rocky Mountain Journal of Mathematics.

Mistry’s talk, “Music Genomics: Applying Seriation Algorithms to Billboard #1 Hits,” was based on joint work with Associate Professor of Mathematics Crista Arangala. Their paper has been submitted for publication.

Awtrey also gave two presentations at the conference. His talk, “A linear resolvent for degree 14 polynomials,” was based on joint work with Strosnider. A corresponding paper has been submitted for publication. Awtrey’s other talk “Absolute resolvents for quartic polynomials,” was based on joint work with Barkley and Elon math majors Jeremy Guinn ’14 and Mackenzie McCraw ’14. Their paper has been accepted for publication in the Pi Mu Epsilon Journal.
