Elon President Leo M. Lambert and ACC President Algie Gatewood signed an agreement Monday to create a scholarship for students from Alamance Community College who wish to transfer to Elon University for their four-year degrees.
Elon President Leo M. Lambert and ACC President Algie Gatewood formalized a partnership between the two schools at a signing ceremony in the Wes and Cathy Elingburg Room in the Student Professional Development Center.
A gift from an anonymous donor is supporting the new endowed scholarship intended to support students who have documented financial need and who would not be able to attend Elon without significant financial assistance.
Beginning in fall 2015, one student will be selected to receive an annual scholarship of $22,500 to be applied toward the cost of tuition, fees, room and board. The award is renewable for up to three years, when the scholarship will be awarded to the next recipient.
“This is a most happy and auspicious day at Elon, announcing a major new scholarship,” Lambert said. “We believe there is no bigger return on investment than gifts for scholarships. … My hope and dream is that this will be a model for more to come.”
Gatewood praised Elon University for its national reputation and said that many Alamance Community College students want to study at the university. Cost, however, often makes such plans impossible.
“Thank you so much for making this happen,” he said. “I can assure you our students will come here and do very well, and that you will be proud of them.”
Each scholarship recipient will be chosen based on outstanding character, academic promise and talent valued by the Elon community, with preference given to Alamance County residents. No separate scholarship application is required, and every admissible student from Alamance Community College with at least 24 transferrable credit hours will be considered for the award.
The scholarship selection committee will include members of Elon’s Office of Admissions and Financial Planning. Recipients will be announced in the spring semester prior to fall enrollment. To remain eligible for continued support, scholarship recipients must maintain a 2.7 cumulative grade point average and be continuously enrolled full-time at Elon University, maintaining 28 credit hours per year or more.
