After serving North Carolina Campus Compact for nine years as associate director, Garvin assumes top leadership of the statewide network of colleges and universities committed to civic engagement.
Garvin has served North Carolina Campus Compact as associate director for the past nine years and as interim executive director since June. She takes over for Lisa Keyne, a longtime executive director who took a position last spring with The Community Engagement Collaboratory at UNC Greensboro.
In her time with NCCC, Garvin contributed to the development of many signature programs and initiatives, including the MLK Challenge, annual statewide conferences and the Civic Engagement Award program. She facilitated the AmeriCorps Education Award program and procured nearly $450,000 in funding from federal, state and private grant sources.
Garvin joined NCCC after relocating from Saint Louis where she served from 2002 through 2005 as the director of projects and volunteer administration for Faith Beyond Walls, and from 2000 through 2002 as the community programs manager and trainer for the Coro Leadership Center.
Her current community involvement includes serving on the leadership team of The Queens Foundation, the education panel review team for the United Way of Greater High Point, as the puppet ministry coordinator and coach at Deep River Church of Christ, and as the higher education representative for the NC Service-Learning Coalition Board.
Garvin holds two degrees from Washington University in St. Louis: a Bachelor of Arts with College Honors, with majors in political science and African-American studies, and a Masters of Social Work with a concentration in social and economic development.
Founded in 2002, North Carolina Campus Compact is the voice of higher education in the state for building the capacity for colleges and universities to produce civically engaged graduates.
