'They Can't Take That Away From Me: Stories From an Unforgettable Generation' – Feb. 19-20

Senior music theatre major and Elon College Fellow Jake Sokoloff interviewed residents at a retirement community whose stories are the backdrop for an original performance - starring the residents themselves - at The Village at Brookwood in Burlington, N.C.

An Elon College Fellow created an original production as part of his undergraduate research project, and the show opens for two nights this month at the very retirement community where he discovered the stories he shares.

“They Can’t Take That Away From Me: Stories From an Unforgettable Generation” is a collection of stories and treasured memories set to the tunes of the popular music from the 1920s, 1930s, and 1940s. This performance piece is a celebration of life and love, giving voice to an important and truly unforgettable generation, said Jake Sokoloff, the senior music theatre major behind the show.

“This has become a passion project and stems from my close relationship with my grandmother,” the Long Island native said of his work. “We all want to know that we matter. I believe that everyone deserves to have their stories heard and their lives celebrated.”

Residents of The Village at Brookwood share their funny, heartwarming and incredibly powerful stories of love, loss, laughter, disappointment, triumph, hope and valuable words of wisdom. The show is set against music from those eras, including “Somewhere Over The Rainbow”, “New York, New York”, and “You Make Me Feel So Young.”

Thursday, February 19, and Friday, February 20
7 p.m. (with a small reception to follow on both evenings)

The show is free and open to the public. No tickets are required.
