Carmen Monico presents on civic engagement at World Bank Land Conference

Furthering her research on civic engagement in development interventions financed by international humanitarian and financial institutions, the assistant professor of human service studies presented at the World Bank Land Conference during spring break.

Assistant Professor Carmen Monico in the Department of Human Service Studies presented at the 16th Annual World Bank Conference on Land and Poverty held March 23-27, 2015, at the World Bank Headquarters in Washington D.C.

The conference aims at fostering dialogue and share best practices in land tenure interventions around the world, particularly those promoting economic development while bringing social equality and reducing poverty. The conference, titled “Linking Land Tenure and Use for Shared Prosperity,” will bring together 1,000 participants from 101 countries, most of them accessing lending from the World Bank.

Participants will include representatives from governments, civil society, academia, the development community, and the private sector; the majority will be coming from developing nations (medium- and low-income countries).

Monico presented on March 25 on “The World Bank’s Experience with Civil Society Participation in Land Tenure Projects: Lessons Learned from Portfolio Review of 50+ Years of Related Lending.” Her presentation is part of a session on donor programs to improve land governance & stakeholder participation.

Monico has conducted research and written extensively on international development and humanitarian assistance, as well as civic engagement and social accountability in World Bank-supported operations. Her research will contribute to the production of the upcoming book “Looking Back and Looking Ahead: The World Bank’s Experience on Land Tenure Projects.”
