A School of Communications group traveled in April to the 2015 Broadcast Education Association’s Festival of Media Arts in Nevada where several students and faculty members received awards.
The Elon contingent headed west April 12-15 to receive the school’s eight awards earned in this year’s conference competitions.

Students in attendance included Wilson Hester ’15, Cappy Leonard ’15, Daniel Spiller ’15, Peter Walpole ’15 and Evan McGillivray ’16. Also on hand were Associate Professors Tom Nelson, Rich Landesberg, and Vic Costello, Assistant Professors Gerald Gibson and J McMerty, and Associate Dean Don Grady.
Costello is a longstanding BEA member and currently serves as the District 2 representative on the board of directors. The district oversees Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina and Tennessee. He participated in a panel titled: “Understanding Legal Licenses and Clearances in the Digital Age: The Use and Misuse of Third-Party Content in Faculty and Student Productions.
Additionally, Grady served as a panelist during the BEA Assessment Boot Camp, which was “geared to faculty and administrators who are interested in both course and programmatic assessment.” His presentation was titled: “Programmatic Assessment: Beyond student-learning outcomes.”
This year’s Festival of Media Arts received 1,352 total submissions – with more than 1,100 in the student competition alone.
