Student groups take part in on-campus leadership conference

Student leaders from 10 campus organizations participated in Elon’s first “Fit to Lead” leadership conference July 29-Aug. 1.

The conference, sponsored by Elon’s Center for Leadership and Organization Development, explored four areas of leadership development: self, team, action and citizenship. Students took part in a ropes course exercise and received feedback and coaching on their leadership styles from Dan LaPasha, a consultant from Learning Technologies, Inc. The group also had the opportunity to glean insights from established campus leaders including Dean of Admissions and Financial Planning Susan Klopman; Vice President and Dean of Student Life Smith Jackson; Assistant Dean of Students Jeff Stein and Assistant Dean of Students Rex Waters, who fielded questions and socialized with the group on Friday afternoon.

Students who participated in Fit to Lead were Kim Bowman, Jen Budd, Mike Bumbry, Carly Johnston, Robert-Thomas “RT” Jones, Valronica Scales, Ralph “Rufus” Swann III, Lindsay Wright, Brittany Yelverton and Lucy Young. Reflecting on the experience, one student wrote, “This has truly been an incredible experience for me. Fit to Lead has taught all of us the value of leadership and what it means to be an effective leader on Elon’s campus.”
