Elon’s 1,240 freshmen and their families got an early start Friday morning, along with members of the Residence Life office, faculty and staff, moving all the comforts and necessities of life into residence hall rooms.
Matthew Wickham of Salisbury, Md., and his family had planned to leave their home Thursday afternoon for the trip to Elon. But friends, family and well-wishers had other ideas, delaying their departure until 9 p.m.
“We got into town about 4:30 this morning, so we’re just a little tired,” said Matthew’s mother, Janet, as the family unloaded clothes and boxes in a third floor room in Hook, Brannock & Barney residence hall. Like many other families, the Wickhams were impressed with the efficiency of move-in day at Elon.
“Everything about the move-in operation was smooth,” said Greg Wickham, Matthew’s father. “Everyone has been so helpful, pitching in to give us a hand and making sure we had everything we need.”
Matthew, who will participate in the Elon College Fellows program, was still at work arranging his computer, microwave and refrigerator. “I’m looking forward to getting started,” he said.
In Carolina residence hall, Anna DeDiemar of Cincinnati and her roommate, Amy Marion of Columbia, Md., enlisted the help of their mothers to organize their room. While Anna and Amy continued to put the finishing touches on things, Amy’s mother, Carol, said she feels good about her daughter’s choice of Elon.
“I’m very happy about her being here,” Carol Marion said. “I’ll miss her, but I know she’s excited to be here and I know she’s going to have a great experience.”
Freshmen and transfer students will have their first mandatory residence hall meetings Friday night, before freshman convocation Under the Oaks at 9 a.m., Saturday, Aug. 28. Orientation activities will continue through Monday before classes begin Tuesday, Aug. 31.
