The National Weather Service has issued a flash flood warning for Alamance County through 10:30 p.m. Saturday.
Up to 4 inches of rain has fallen in Alamance County due to Hurricane Matthew and an additional 1-3 inches of rain is forecast for the evening hours. With a flash flood warning in effect, motorists should exercise caution and avoid flooded roads and bridges and low-lying areas. Higher amounts of rain have fallen over the eastern half of state with massive flooding in some areas. Hourly rainfall estimates from radar in eastern North Carolina are as high as 7 inches per hour! Buildings have flooded, roads washed out, and sections of Interstates 95 and 40 have flooded in the Tar Heel State. For the Elon area, the flash flood warning is in effect until 10:30 p.m., with a flood warning continuing until Sunday night.
You are advised to continue checking the National Weather Service Raleigh office for the latest on the storm track and its potential impact: http://www.weather.gov/rah/. Also, please check this E-net website for news and information: www.elon.edu/e-net
Also, please note that the Elon football game against New Hampshire, originally scheduled for Saturday, has been moved to 7 p.m. Friday at Rhodes Stadium.
Preparations you should make
• Prepare for a power outage: keep your cell phone, laptop computer and other devices charged and be sure to have a flashlight with fresh batteries.
• Sign-up for E-Alert, Elon’s emergency text message system, at www.elon.edu/e-alert. This will ensure that you receive immediate notifications on your cell phone from Campus Safety and Police. If you are not a first-time user of E-Alert, it is important to verify that your registration is current, up-to-date and active.
• Download Live Safe, Elon’s Campus Safety and Police app for mobile phones. You can send messages to their office from any location, and also receive push notifications for updates on campus conditions. To register for LiveSafe:
1. Open Google Play or the Apple App Store on your phone. Search for “LiveSafe” and download the option with the blue shield.
2. Tap “Sign up”. Fill in your profile information and create a password.
3. Elon University may pop-up if you are close to campus. If so, tap “Yes”. Otherwise, tap “Change” to select Elon University.
• Update your emergency contact information, local address and cell phone number with the University. Go to http://ontrack.elon.edu, click OnTrack for Students, and then click the “Address Update Form” link under “Communication” to provide or update this information.
• Communicate with your parents or others who will want to know how you will communicate with them in case of an emergency. Let them know they may call an Administrator-on-Call via the Campus Dispatcher at 336.278.5555 any time, day or night.
What you should do in case of severe weather
• Stay inside and away from windows. Falling limbs and downed trees are likely.
• Do not drive. Flooding may cause dangerous conditions. If you are on the road, do not drive into standing water on the roadway and reduce speed to avoid hydroplaning.
• Check with programs that had activities planned for the next few days, as these events may have been cancelled. For example, the tennis tournament at Elon has been cancelled.
• Let someone know where you at all times.
• Report unsafe conditions to Campus Safety and Police via LiveSafe or by calling (336.278.5555) or by calling 911.
• Check the E-Net website frequently for important information updates. (www.elon.edu/e-net)
