Peter Jakes '17, Nathan Pool '17, Michelle Rave '17, Kelly Reagan '17 and Jade Schrader '16 gave presentations at the 12th Annual Regional Mathematics and Statistics Conference held at UNC-Greensboro on Nov. 11-12.
Peter Jakes ’17, Nathan Pool ’17, Michelle Rave ’17, Kelly Reagan ’17 and Jade Schrader ’16 gave presentations at the 12th Annual Regional Mathematics and Statistics Conference held at UNC-Greensboro on Nov. 11-12.
A total of 210 students and faculty attended the conference, including 12 from Elon University. Among the 68 student presentations, nine individuals were recognized with an award for outstanding presentation. Reagan received one of the awards this year, marking the third time an Elon student has received an award at this conference. Previous award winners were Nicole Soltz in 2014 and Alison Miller in 2012. Reagan also participated as panelist on Saturday afternoon, where she discussed the benefits of engaging in undergraduate research,
Information on student presentations is as follows:
- Jakes presented “Degree Six Polynomials and Their Solvability by Radicals”. He was mentored by A.L. Hook Associate Professor Chad Awtrey.
- Pool presented “The Automatic Construction of Fractals of Arbitrary Dimension”. He was mentored by Professor Jeff Clark.
- Rave presented “Prevention Methods: Mathematical Modeling of Dengue Fever”. She was mentored by Professor Crista Arangala and Associate Professor Karen Yokley.
- Reagan presented “A Mathematical Model of Dengue Fever Incorporating Human Travel”. She was mentored by Yokley.
- Schrader presented “Galois 2-adic Fields of Degree 16”. She was mentored by Awtrey and Associate Professor Jim Beuerle.
