Biology professor gives research seminar at Appalachian State University

Jen Hamel, assistant professor of biology, presented on how biological community interactions affect mating behavior in insects.

Assistant Professor of Biology Jen Hamel gave an invited seminar as part of the Biology Department seminar series on Wednesday, Nov. 16, at Appalachian State University, in Boone, N.C.

The presentation was on how biological community interactions, such as parasitism and hybridization between closely related species, can affect the evolution of mating behavior in insects. The presentation highlighted contributions by small summer cohorts of Elon students to large research projects led by Hamel, as well as work by Dawson Nance, a 2015 SURE student in Hamel’s lab group

The seminar was titled, “A Community Approach to Studying Mating Behavior in Insects.”
