Assistant Professor Cara McFadden explores the collegiate recreation field and the expanding role recreation programs, services and facilities contribute to a university community.
Cara McFadden, an assistant professor in Elon University’s Department of Sport and Event Management, has published a book chapter, titled “Collegiate Recreation,” in the fifth edition of “Rentz’s Student Affairs Practice in Higher Education.” The book, published in October, is considered the leading guide for professionals entering careers in student affairs at colleges and universities.
McFadden penned her chapter with Danielle Molina, an assistant professor at Mississippi State University. According to McFadden, the authors were selected because of their extensive backgrounds in collegiate recreation and student affairs, respectively, as well as their experience in high education.
The chapter examines the field of collegiate recreation and the expanding role recreation programs, services and facilities contribute to a university community. It begins with a historical overview, then pivots to the collegiate recreation and professional standards that guide the critical role within the university setting and organizational structures found in these environments. The authors then highlight student development theory and entry-level qualifications, before concluding with a look at future trends and available resources.
