Communications expansion project continues with opening of Steers Pavilion

Three days into the new year Elon University christened a new academic facility, officially opening Steers Pavilion with two communications classes.

The 7,300-square-foot pavilion, which sits in front of Whitley Auditorium and between Long Building and Dwight C. Schar Hall, is a part of the School of Communications’ ongoing expansion project.

While faculty members began moving into Steers in December, Lecturer Ryan Witt’s “Creating Multimedia Content” course on Jan. 3 was the first class in the facility.

Named in recognition of a gift by Bob and Lauren Steers, parents of John “JP” Steers ’15, the pavilion also houses the school’s Imagining the Internet Center, four faculty offices and a student-faculty research area.

The school has celebrated several expansion milestones over the past six months, including the opening of Schar Hall and Turner Theatre, the Snow Family Grand Atrium and Citrone Plaza, as well as the renovation of McEwen Communications Building, including Jane and Brian Williams Studio.

This spring, Long Building will be renovated to house the M.A. in Interactive Media program and the Sport & Event Management Department, both currently located in Powell Building, completing the school’s construction projects.
