The School of Communications’ new 220-seat movie theater will host programming throughout the month of January, beginning with the superhero film “Max Steel” this weekend.
As the temperatures drop and winter weather becomes a reality, Elon University’s new Turner Theatre will offer the campus community a few more reasons to stay indoors.
The 220-seat movie theater, located on the first floor of Dwight C. Schar Hall, will host film screenings throughout the university’s Winter Term session, beginning with the action superhero film “Max Steel” on Friday, Jan. 6. Scroll down to see a complete listing of this month’s movies, which include box office hits, documentaries and family-friendly flicks.
Turner Theatre has teamed with Elon’s Student Union Board to show several widely released films on Fridays and Saturdays during the month. In addition to “Max Steel,” the theater will screen Zach Galifianakis’ “Masterminds” and the animated adventure buddy comedy “Storks.”
Several family-friendly films, including “The Secret Lives of Pets,” “Kubo and the Two Strings” and “Pete’s Dragon,” are also scheduled for Sunday afternoons, beginning at 4 p.m.
The music documentary “The Art of Listening,” scheduled for Jan. 12, explores the importance of reproducing hi-res audio that sounds as the artist, producers and engineers intended. The film’s contributors include composer Hans Zimmer, comedian Reggie Watts and a slew of award-winning producers and engineers.
Additionally, Turner Theater has partnered with Elon Sustainability to host a Jan. 19 showing of “Before the Flood,” a 2016 documentary film about climate change. A collaboration created by Academy Award-winning filmmaker Fisher Stevens and actor Leonardo DiCaprio, the film presents a riveting account of the dramatic climate changes now occurring around the world.
Funded by a gift from Elon parents Jim and Toni Turner and their sons, Parker Turner ’06 and Garrett Turner ’08, the theater is a state-of-the-art venue with an HD projection system, 25-foot-wide screen, stadium-style seating and a premier sound system.
All faculty, staff and students have free admission to Turner Theatre with a Phoenix Card, along with family members or a friend.
