The winter storm that began moving through the region Friday afternoon dropped more than eight inches of snow on Elon's campus overnight.
The Elon community woke Saturday morning to find the campus blanketed under more than 8 inches of snow as a winter storm moved through the region.
Snow began falling in Elon in late afternoon on Friday, with snowfall picking up dramatically after dark and through the night. Temperatures dropped below freezing after midnight, and continued to fall through Saturday morning, standing at about 25 degrees heading toward noon.
Snow continued to fall through midday, adding to what had already accumulated, with the accumulation total generally adhering to the predictions of weather forecasters who had anticipated up to 8 inches of snowfall overnight with an additional 2 to 4 inches added during the day on Saturday. Despite the re-emergence of the sun in the afternoon, temperatures are expected to drop to 7 degrees Saturday night, hit a high of 27 during the day on Sunday, and then fall to 2 degrees Sunday night.
Crews with Elon’s Physical Plant Department began their work on Friday night, with an emphasis on clearing critical pathways to help ensure the safety of those walking through campus. Their work throughout the night and morning is helping keep campus operating and on schedule throughout the day.
Elon University Police Chief Dennis Franks reported no issues as of late morning, with his team ready to respond to any snow-related issues that might arise. Franks encouraged everyone to stay inside and stay off the roads unless absolutely necessary.
It is important to wear proper footwear when walking as spots on the campus may be slippery. Please know that snow and wintery mix weather is not frequent in this area, and many roads and highways will not be plowed and suitable for travel. Additionally, many persons are not accustomed to driving under these conditions. It is advisable to avoid driving.
