A scholar of international property law, Professor Henry Gabriel has traveled to Europe and Asia this spring for educational and legal advocacy work related to his areas of expertise.
An Elon Law professor renowned for his expertise in international property law has traveled the globe in recent months to share his knowledge and legal counsel with government experts and graduate students at leading law schools in Great Britain, Italy and China.
Professor Henry Gabriel is currently a Visiting Fellow at Harris Manchester College, Oxford University and a Visiting Scholar at the Oxford University Centre for Commercial Law where he is researching comparative legal approaches to the principle of title in secured transactions law.
In March, Gabriel delivered a talk, “The Relevance in Arbitration of the 2016 UNIDROIT Principles of International Commercial Contracts in Long Term Commercial Agreements,” at the China University of International Business and Economics in Beijing. A few weeks later, he gave a series of lectures on the American law of electronic commerce at the Graduate School of Law of Jinan University in Guangzhou, China.
Gabriel recently served as a member of the United States Delegation to the Committee of Governmental Experts in a meeting in Rome for the negotiation of a new protocol for mining, agricultural, and construction equipment to the Cape Town Convention on International Interests in Mobile Equipment.
Gabriel is a life member of the Uniform Law Commission, having served the organization for 25 years. He had been appointed a commissioner by the Louisiana Legislature for 21 years and has served the State of North Carolina for the last five by appointment of the governor.
Appointed by successive presidential administrations, Gabriel also serves as a U.S. delegate to the U.N. Commission on International Trade Law where he has worked on international trade laws for electronic commerce and transport documents. He advises the U.S. State Department as a member of the Department’s Advisory Committee on Private International Law, and he is an elected member of Rome’s Governing Council of the International Institute for the Unification of Private Law (UNIDROIT). Gabriel is a Fellow of the U.K.-based Chartered Institute of Arbitrators and an elected member of the American Law Institute.
The former Devan Daggett Professor of Law at Loyola University, Gabriel has authored nine books and more than 50 law review articles. He has been lead counsel in more than 50 federal appeals in the U.S. Supreme Court and the U.S. Courts of Appeals. Gabriel has significant international experience as a visiting professor at law schools around the world.
