The director of campus recreation was one of six faculty members to facilitate this professional development event for 48 collegiate recreation professionals from across the country.
Larry Mellinger, director of Campus Recreation, served as a faculty member at the NIRSA School of Collegiate Recreation, Level II in St. Paul, Minnesota, this May. The event, held every three years, included 48 collegiate recreation professionals with at least five years of professional experience from across the country.
Daily themes at this year’s school included managing talent, building culture, strategic decision-making, mindfulness, and strategies of a successful leader. Mellinger led discussions and activities on building an organizational culture of trust, values-based budgeting, strategic planning and career advancement.
Other school faculty members are professors or directors of campus recreation departments from across the country, including Chad Morgan, a 2000 Elon alumnus and current director of Sun Devil Fitness at Arizona State University.
Faculty members for the NIRSA School of Collegiate Recreation serve a three-year term, which includes two Level I experiences and one Level II experience. Mellinger completed his first year as a member of the faculty and will facilitate Level I in each of the next two years, which is intended for professionals with less than five years of experience.
