Mia Faith Chamberlain and Jordan Thompson ’14 led an Oct. 25 presentation titled “Play at the Next Level: A Career in Sport,” highlighting the benefits of a legal education in the sport industry.
Elon University’s student-run Sport Management Club hosted two Elon Law Leadership Fellows in October for a main campus program that aligned with the Sport Management Department’s mission to prepare undergraduates for the business of sport.
“Play at the Next Level: A Career in Sport” featured Elon Law students Mia Faith Chamberlain L’Dec.’17 and Jordan Thompson ’14 L’Dec.’17 for a discussion of their experiences working in the sport industry.
The two have collectively interned and gained professional experience with several prominent organizations, including the Atlantic Coast Conference, Detroit Lions, Washington Redskins and sports agencies in New York and Georgia.
Approximately 70 students and faculty members attended the Oct. 25 lecture.
During the 90-minute event, Chamberlain and Thompson highlighted the benefits of a legal education for individuals entering the sport industry, touched on their own experiences in law school, and detailed how a sport management degree can set students apart in sport law. Additionally, the law students provided advice for SPT majors on how they can prepare for their careers today. The presentation concluded with a question-and-answer session.
Before entering Elon Law, Chamberlain studied communication media at North Carolina State University. Currently, she is a Leadership Fellow at Elon where she is pursuing a dual JD/MBA degree. While in law school, Chamberlain served as a business and legal affairs intern with the Atlantic Coast Conference, completing her residency with the Power 5 conference. In summer 2017, she interned with Vision Quest Agency, a sports agency based in New York City that primarily represents coaches and basketball players.
Chamberlain is among 10 students from across the country selected to attend the First Liberty Fellowship program, an initiative based in Washington, D.C., that provides networking opportunities with professionals involved in protecting religious freedom in the United States.
An Elon graduate with a degree in political science, Thompson was also a defensive back for the Phoenix football team. Before attending Elon Law, he completed an internship with the Detroit Lions in the franchise’s player personnel department. Following his first year of law school, Thompson interned with Element Sports Group in Atlanta, assisting with the representation of more than 40 NFL clients. He later completed his residency-in-practice with the Washington Redskins and its football administration and legal affairs department. Most recently, Thompson worked as a summer associate at a global litigation law firm in Washington, D.C.
