On Thursday, November 2, Erin Hone, lecturer in education, and Marna Winter, lecturer in education and chair of the department of education and wellness, along with students Molly Kearns and Kristen O’Neill, both junior special and elementary majors, presented twice at the N.C. Council of Teachers of Mathematics state conference in Greensboro, N.C.
As a model of collaboration, Hone, an elementary math specialist, and Winter, an elementary literacy specialist, presented on the prevalence of literacy skills in effective math instruction. Their presentation included a correlation to national and state standards, examples from classroom teachers in practice, and engaged participants in collaborative exploration of ways to purposefully integrate literacy and math practices.
They were excited to see Elon Education alumni, now classroom teachers, in both of their presentations, offering examples of the literacy-math integration in practice.
