This year's 5 for 1 food drive hosted by Campus Kitchen of the Kernodle Center and Elon Dining was the most successful to date bringing in 1,106 pounds of food to fight hunger in our county.
Students, staff, faculty and community members worked together for this fall's 5 for 1 food drive as 1,106 pounds of food was donated in just five days, making this our most successful food drives to date. The amount collected was greater than both 5 for 1 drives from last school year combined.
The 5 for 1 drive was hosted by Campus Kitchen, housed in the Kernodle Center for Service Learning and Community Engagement, in partnership with Elon Dining who provided a meal voucher for anyone who brought in 5 or more food items to donate.
The food was sorted by student volunteers and then delivered to our community partners, The Salvation Army and Allied Churches of Alamance County. Food pantries at these two community partners distribute food on a daily basis to local residents.
The 5 for 1 donations are going directly to support the need here in North Carolina which remains high: one out of four children don’t know where their next meal will come from and approximately 160,000 people in NC receive emergency food assistance in any given week (Feeding the Carolinas).
Organizers offer their thanks to all who participated. The success of this fall's drive wouldn’t have been possible without the support of Elon Dining, our student leaders in Campus Kitchen, and the kind faculty, staff, students, and community members who donated.
If you would like to continue to donate food for our community partners, Campus Kitchen collects items throughout the year. Donations can be dropped off at any time in the bin outside of the Kernodle Center door on the second floor of Moseley.
