Due to the forecast for increasing amounts of snow throughout the day, Elon University will be closed today. Read this note for full details about campus services, including dining and transportation.
The National Weather Service has upgraded the Winter Storm Warning for today through 9 p.m. Snow is expected throughout the region and may become heavy from late morning into the afternoon. Road conditions are expected to be such that travel will be very difficult to impossible. As of 11 a.m. Wednesday, forecasters were predicting snow accumulations of 5 to 9 inches in the area before precipitation tapers off by 10 p.m. Temperatures are expected to drop to 10 degrees overnight, with wind chills dropping into the single digits Wednesday night into Thursday morning.
Classes on campus are canceled and all university offices are closed today, except as noted below.

Please note that many class activities will continue online or through out-of-class activities/assignments. Students should check with their instructors for further information.
Physical Plant staff will be working throughout the day to clear sidewalks, parking lots, and roadways around campus, but spots may be slippery, so please wear proper footwear and be careful when walking around campus. Roads may be treacherous and driving is not advised while the Winter Storm Warning is in effect.
The Laura Dunne Astley Memorial Lecture with journalist/author Peggy Orenstein, is still planned to occur as scheduled at 6:00 p.m. this evening in the Lakeside Meeting Rooms.

E-net is the very best information source during this winter event and is updated regularly to reflect any changes, advisories or cancellations. Information about campus delays and cancellation will also available via the university’s Twitter and Facebook accounts and on a special telephone recorded message at 278-SNOW.
It is important to wear proper footwear when walking as spots on the campus may be slippery. Please know that snow and wintery mix weather is not frequent in this area, and many roads and highways will not be plowed and suitable for travel. Additionally, many persons are not accustomed to driving under these conditions.
Please contact the Campus Safety and Police dispatcher at (336) 278-5555 to report any unsafe conditions request assistance for emergencies or general information. This winter weather is a good reminder to sign up for the university systems that provide text and email notifications to members of the Elon community:
- Continue to check the E-net website for regular updates: www.elon.edu/e-net
- Sign-up for E-Alert, Elon’s emergency text message system, at www.elon.edu/e-alert to ensure you will receive text and email updates. If you previously signed up for E-Alert, it is important to verify that your registration is current and updated.
- Download Live Safe, Elon’s Campus Safety and Police app for mobile phones. You can send messages to their office from any location, and also receive push notifications for updates on campus conditions. To register for LiveSafe:
1. Open Google Play or the Apple App Store on your phone. Search for “LiveSafe” and download the option with the blue shield.
2. Tap “Sign up”. Fill in your profile information and create a password.
3. Elon University may pop-up if you are close to campus. If so, tap “Yes”. Otherwise, tap “Change” to select Elon University.
