Elon's women's basketball team is a No. 13 seed in its second-straight NCAA tournament and will take on N.C. State later this week.
For a second-straight year, Elon's women's basketball team is heading to the NCAA tournament, where it will face N.C. State on Friday.
Cheers went up in Alumni Gym during the tournament selection show on Monday night when the news flashed on the screen that Elon had earned a No. 13 seed and would face the Wolfpack later this week. Scores of fans had gathered to celebrate the team's second NCAA tournament berth and learn who Elon will be playing later this week.
"We're super excited," said head coach Charlotte Smith. "We going dancing!"
With its win in the tournament championship game over top-seeded Drexel University on Saturday, Elon moved to a 25-7 record on the season so far, and earned its second trip to the big dance. The No. 3 seed in the CAA tournament, Elon saw convincing wins over William & Mary and James Madison University en route to a 57-45 championship win over top-ranked Drexel on the Philadelphia university's home court.
Elon's success this year follows a 2016-17 season during which it notched regular season and conference tournament championships, the first in Elon's Division 1 era. The team is now riding a 13-game winning streak that has seen them grown stronger as the season has progressed.
"We are not just here to participate," Smith told the cheering crowd Monday night. "We are here to win."
Friday's game against N.C. State will tip off in Raleigh, N.C., at 2:30 p.m. and will air on ESPN2.
