At the Conference on College Composition and Communication (CCCC) 2018 convention in Kansas City, Missouri, scholars hosted a roundtable panel on Researching Transfer: Addressing the Challenges of Knowing What Works, on Friday, March 16.
The roundtable panel was organized by Irwin Weiser of Purdue University and featured three speakers who discussed methodological and contextual challenges of conducting research on the transfer of writing knowledge.
Among those speakers was Jessie Moore, Elon’s director of engaged learning, who discussed lessons learned from multi-institutional studies, focusing on transfer of writing knowledge. Moore was also the leader of the 2011-2013 CEL Seminar on Writing and the Question of Transfer.
Three participants in the 2011-2013 CEL seminar also served on the roundtable panel as panel respondents — Dana Driscoll (Indiana University of Pennsylvania), Elizabeth Wardle (Miami University of Ohio) and Kathleen Yancey (Florida State University).
The goals of the panel included discussing the challenges of conducting empirical research on transfer, suggesting strategies for addressing those challenges, and fostering dialogue and brainstorming for future longitudinal studies on learning transfer.
