Ellis, Elon’s 2004-2005 University Distinguished Scholar, will explore how powwows were created a century ago and why they continue to be important to Indian people all over the West. As an author, co-author, and editor, Ellis has published extensively on American Indian boarding schools and Christianity. His most recent work, A Dancing People: Powwow Culture on the Southern Plains, has been praised as “a landmark synthesis and defining moment in the modern era of Plains Indian studies.”
