John Glenn was commissioned in the Marine Corps in 1943 and flew 59 missions during World War II and 90 missions during the Korean War. He became a test pilot in 1954, and in 1959, he was selected as one of seven Mercury astronauts. Three years later in February 1962, aboard the space capsule Friendship 7, Glenn became the first American to orbit the Earth. Glenn retired from the space program and the Marine Corps in 1965 to enter private business and to pursue his interest in politics. In 1974 he was elected to the U.S. Senate from Ohio, where he served for 24 years.
