The weather was far from frightful as almost 30 Elon students took part in the second annual Polar Bear Plunge at Lake Mary Nell on Wednesday, Jan. 12. Details and photos...
Temperatures were close to 70 degrees for the event, almost 30 degrees warmer than last year’s Polar Bear Plunge. Still, sophomore Carson Foushee says the water is just plain cold this time of year.
“It’s SO cold,” said Foushee, who also lost a shoe in the plunge. “But at least I can say that now I’ve been in Lake Mary Nell.”
Students raced to the middle of the lake to capture small boats and race back to shore. The winners received gift certificates from Wal-Mart, Steak & Shake and Blockbuster. Everyone who participated received an “I Survived the Plunge” t-shirt.
The Polar Bear Plunge is sponsored by the Resident Student Association.
