Campus Compact has named Lucy Jones '20 a recipient of a Newman Civic Fellowship, which recognizes and supports community-oriented students and is named for Frank Newman, a founder of Campus Compact.
Lucy Jones '20 has been named a Newman Civic Fellow by Campus Compact in recognition of her investment in finding solutions for challenges facing communities and her passion for enacting social change.
A philosophy major who is minoring in political science, religious studies, and poverty and social justice, Jones is focused on addressing issues of voter participation and civic engagement, particularly among college students. A member of the Elon Political Engagement Work Group, she collaborates with members of the university community to improve political awareness and civic engagement on campus.
"I believe that the best way to make change is through the political process, a process that can only function effectively if the people who care participate," Jones said. "I am proud to be part of a community that doesn't shy away from challenging questions, but allows me to learn, alongside others, the best way we can co-create our world."
The Newman Civic Fellowship is a one-year experience emphasizing personal, professional and civic growth. Through the fellowship, Campus Compact provides a variety of learning and networking opportunities, including a national conference of Newman Civic Fellows in partnership with the Edward M. Kennedy Institute for the United States Senate.
A native of Winston-Salem, Jones is the volunteer coordinator for Elon Votes!, a nonpartisan organization focused on voter participation. She is the student coordinator of Deliberative Dialogues, a discussion-based event that takes place each semester and seeks to encourage conversation among Elon students and the surrounding community.
In her letter supporting Jones for the fellowship, President Connie Ledoux Book noted that the Elon junion and Elon College Fellow leads by example. "Lucy Jones is a shining example of student engagement and leadership at Elon University, and her growth through the Newman Civic Fellows Program will not only inmpact Lucy, but other students who engage with her," Book wrote.
Jones is part of a cohort of 262 fellows selected for 2019 that will receive a variety of learning and networking opportunities as well as pathways to exclusive scholarship and post-graduate opportunities. Fellows are invited fto a national conference of Newman Civic Fellows in partnership with the Edward M. Kennedy Institute for the United States Senate.
