Bird Stasz, associate professor of education, and Kim Eke, senior instructional designer for social sciences, are working with the Academy for Educational Development’s Global Learning Portal project. Based in Washington D.C., the Global Learning Portal is a public-private partnership between AED, Sun Microsystems and USAID. Its goal is the expansion of educational resources available to primary and secondary school teachers in developing countries.
The Global Learning Portal has created six sites in Brazil, Ethiopia, Mozambique, Nicaragua, Uganda, and South Africa. In its first year, the GLP is engaging more than 1,000 teachers in on-line discussions, creation of educational materials, and research on teacher training.
Stasz and Eke are working with the PEAKS (Participation, Education, and Knowledge Strengthening) project in Uzbekistan to develop an interactive, multimedia site on the portal. The site will be the first of its kind and expands the portal’s language capabilities to include Russian and Uzbek.
The Uzbek site will serve as a information and communication hub for the project in Uzbekistan, supporting training for 900 teachers in its first year.
The PEAKS project is introducing ITLM (interactive teaching and learning methods) to teachers throughout the country to promote teacher education.
