We regret to inform you of the death of Trustee Emeritus Iris McEwen Coupland. Mrs. Coupland died Monday evening, July 4. The burial service was private. The family received friends Friday, July 8 at Maynard House.
Elected to the Board in 1987, Mrs. Coupland served until 2002, when she was made trustee emeritus. She was the fourth successive member of her family to serve on the Elon College Board of Trustees, following her father, James McEwen, Sr.; her mother, Iris Holt McEwen; and her brother, James McEwen, Jr. She and her family have been generous donors to Elon. McEwen Communications Building and McEwen Dining Hall are named for her parents; McCrary Theatre in the Center for the Arts is named for Coupland and her first husband, John A. McCrary. Holt Chapel on South Campus is named for Coupland’s grandparents. The John A. and Iris McEwen McCrary Scholarship was endowed in 1979, and the Iris Holt McEwen Community Service Award was created in 1985 by Coupland’s children to honor their grandmother.
