Writing Center lead consultant and accounting and finance double major Erin Leonard '20 and Julia Bleakney, director of the Writing Center and Assistant Professor of English, present on leadership in the Writing Center at an international conference.
Writing Center consultant Erin Leonard ’20, an accounting and finance double major, presented with Julia Bleakney, director of the Writing Center in the Center for Writing Excellence and assistant professor of English, at the International Writing Centers Association conference, combined this year with the National Conference of Peer Tutors. The conference was held Oct. 16-19 in Columbus, Ohio, and attracted more than 1,000 undergraduate and graduate students who work in writing centers and their directors from all over the world.
Leonard and Bleakney presented their research on the leadership frameworks they plan to implement into Writing Center consultant training this semester. The training is designed to strengthen awareness among Writing Center consultants of the importance of leadership skills to their work in the Writing Center. This project emerged from Bleakney’s experience as a Leadership Education Faculty Scholar in 2018-2019. Those interested in this program may contact Cara Lucia, Faculty Fellow for Leadership Education.
Leonard and Bleakney will implement and assess the consultant leadership training, using grant-in-aid funds from Elon’s Undergraduate Research Program. Leonard will present an updated version of the project at SURF in Spring 2020.
