The chair of the Cinema and Television Arts Department participated in an Oct. 11 panel discussion titled “Communicating Your Value as A Creative Scholar,” examining the recognition of creative-based scholarship.
Vic Costello, associate professor of cinema and television arts, participated on a panel titled “Communicating Your Value as A Creative Scholar” during BEA-ON-LOCATION, the Broadcast Education Association’s 2019 Super-Regional Conference. The three-day event was held Oct. 10-12 at the University of Colorado, Boulder.
Costello was one of three panelists who explored the issues and challenges in recognizing creative-based scholarship as equally valid to academic research. Led by moderator Michael Bruce of the University of Alabama, Costello teamed with Kathleen Ryan of the University of Colorado, Boulder and Scott Hodgson of the University of Oklahoma to lead a discussion concerning best practices for creative scholars approaching the reappointment, tenure and promotion process.
Costello currently serves as vice president of academic relations on BEA’s Board of Directors.
In 2018, a one-hour documentary produced by Costello was awarded Best of Show in the BEA’s Faculty Documentary Competition. His film, “Young Filmmakers of Ethiopia,” chronicles the struggles, challenges and opportunities of Oromo student storytellers in Ethiopia and Washington, D.C., as they pursue dreams of producing native-language films and working in their country’s nascent film industry.
