The group of students and staff spent their Fall Break supporting Hurricane Florence relief efforts in Wilmington, North Carolina.
Local television news station FOX8 featured Elon students and staff who spent their Fall Break helping people impacted in 2018 by Hurricane Florence.
The effort was part of the Kernodle Center for Service Learning and Community Engagement’s “Alternative Break” initiative in which students, faculty and staff take on community service projects over fall or spring break sessions at Elon.
A group of Elon students and staff traveled to Wilmington, North Carolina, to help remodel two mobile homes that suffered damage during the Hurricane, which made landfall last September.
“I was really shocked,” Chloe Hultman ’20 told FOX8. “I didn’t really know that Hurricane Florence was still leaving an impact.”

While the Wilmington group worked at the coast, another team of 14 students and staff spent their Alternative Break in Asheville, North Carolina, volunteering with non-profit organizations that focus on food insecurity.
Alternative Breaks are immersive service experiences designed to introduce students to new communities while working to address pressing domestic and global social issues. Participating in an Alternative Break is a great way to get to know other students, make a positive impact and have a meaningful fall or spring break.
Registration for spring Alternative Break opportunities is now open. Find more information on the Kernodle Center’s website.
