CATL Teaching and Learning Grants support innovative, inclusive, and/or scholarly teaching and learning projects. Below are the recipients of the Fall 2019 CATL Teaching and Learning Grants, along with a description of their grant project.
Assistant Professor Dani Lane and Assistant Professor Katie Baker from the School of Education were awarded grant funding to study the implementation of the edTPA— a performance-based assessment — to assess the outcomes of teacher education candidates. Their project will analyze and compare quantitative assessments and qualitative data the edTPA from one cohort of teacher candidates at Elon double majoring in Elementary Education and Special Education.
The study will allow them to determine program strengths and areas of needed improvement in order to adjust curricula. They will also study the perceptions of the edTPA process from multiple perspectives, including the teacher candidates, their mentor teachers, university supervisors, and instructors to analyze differences and similarities in experiences with the edTPA.
Hwayeon Ryu, assistant professor of mathematics, was awarded a teaching and learning grant to attend two mini-courses and workshops on “Inquiry-Based Learning and Teaching” at the Joint Mathematics Meetings in January. To meet the growing need of in-depth quantitative skills for STEM students while promoting engaged learning, she proposes to implement Project-Based Learning in MTH 445, where students will obtain knowledge and skills by working for an extended period of time to investigate an engaging and complex question or problem. She will do this by enhancing collaborative assignments with real-world problems and newly developing a final group project as a part of core assessments.
Founded in 2005, the Center for the Advancement of Teaching and Learning serves as a catalyst for effective teaching and engaged learning at Elon University.
