President Connie Ledoux Book was featured in the article, which focused on the makeup of the UNC System Board of Governors.
President Connie Ledoux Book recently offered her thoughts about the value of gender diversity in higher education leadership for an article in The News & Observer of Raleigh, N.C., focused on the makeup of the UNC System Board of Governors.
The article by reporter Kate Murphy noted that 21 men sit on the 26-member board overseeing the state’s public university system and that the board does not reflect the demographic diversity of the state.
President Book, who left Elon to become the first woman to serve at provost at The Citadel in South Carolina, and returned to Elon in 2018 to become the university’s first female president, told the News & Observer that “the more diverse your team is, the higher it’s going to function.”
Book said that diversity in leadership allows universities to form diverse responses to issues that arise and apply more diverse thinking about strategy. “If everyone around the room is the same gender or the same race, I’m going to get fairly homogenous thinking,” Book told the news outlet.
