Professor Scott Gaylord offered insight for the WXII story that focused on gun control legislation and interpretation of the Second Amendment.
WXII, a broadcast news station in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, featured Professor of Law Scott Gaylord in a recent story about the Second Amendment and proposed gun control legislation in Virginia.
The article, “Constitutional law expert, police chief weigh in on 2nd Amendment debate,” discusses responses by Virginia law enforcement officials to the proposed legislation. The story focuses on the police chief of Danville, who says he will enforce changes if they are made into law, and the sheriff of Grayson County, who says he will not enforce changes.
Gaylord offers his interpretation of the law as it relates to the Constitution and addresses the questions courts will likely have to consider as the debate continues.
“I think it’s important for everybody to start with the Constitution itself and to look at the text of the Constitution,” Gaylord told WXII. “With the Second Amendment, it talks about the right to bear arms. What does that mean? What’s the scope? What counts as an arm? Semi-automatic weapons? Automatic weapons? What is it to bear those arms?”
